Vuescan is vastly superior to the scanning software that comes with your scanner - more controllable, more predictable, and once mastered can give you far superior results, AND in less time. This is an enormous time saver, that really pays dividends over the years.Ībove and beyond providing a unified interface to all the scanners you're every likely to use, the real benefit of Vuescan is its power. Put simply - learn Vuescan once, and learn it for life. You can even unify your approach across both film and document scanning, if you do both. That is - you can use Vuescan with ALL your scanners, for jobs both simple and complex - meaning if you upgrade/change your scanning hardware along the way, there's nothing new to learn. I think the primary reason to use Vuescan is that, once learned, it is excellent professional level scanning software that unifies your workflow across machines. It's also worth pointing out that, even for supported scanners, the Vuescan drivers tend to be more stable than the drivers that come with the scanners!Īlso worth noting that Vuescan runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux (including the Raspberry Pi!).īut to focus on the wide scanner support is, I think, to rather undersell the full power and utility of Vuescan. (I should note here that really high end like Imacons etc, are not supported - but just about everything else is - Epson, Canon, HP, Brother, Canon, Nikon, etc etc). Why should perfectly useful hardware be discarded if there's an easy solution like Vuescan? So that is indeed a very valid use case for Vuescan. The Vuescan website focuses foremost on compatibility - and it is indeed compatible with a mind boggling array of scanners (see the many brands/models here) - and one of the common uses of Vuescan it to support an older scanner that no longer has drivers available for modern operating systems. It's from a family business (like Image Science!) - and has been a reliable tool that we have used for some 20 years now. Vuescan is a pretty remarkable piece of software.
